Episode #114: How artificial light can cause anxiety & depression + tips to help protect your mental and physical health from adverse artificial light exposure

December 19, 2019 • 52m

By now, I am sure you have heard about the dangers of artificial blue light. Almost every day there is a new article talking about how you shouldn’t sleep near your smart phone, or how you should avoid spending more than several hours in a windowless, artificial-lit room, or how you need to be careful how much time you spend in front of a computer screen. Is there any truth to all these warnings? Is artificial blue light really that bad for us? And what is it exactly? Is there anything we do about artificial blue light exposure in today’s 24-hour, technology-centred world? In this episode I interview Andy, the founder of BluBlox, to discuss what blue light is, how it affects our mental health, and what we can do to protect ourselves.   For more information on Andy and BluBlox visit: https://www.blublox.com. How to Heal From Trauma, Signs of Secondary Trauma, and How EMDR can Help with Trauma Recovery and PTSD with Therapist and Trauma Expert Alyssa Mancao

May 07, 2020 • 54m

For many of us, trauma is something with a capital “T”, a big event or situation, such as a car accident or pandemic, that impacts us in dramatic and unforeseen ways. Yet, as I discuss in this week’s blog and podcast with licensed clinical social worker and therapist Alyssa Mancao, trauma with a lowercase “t” is something many people have to deal with on a daily basis. This kind of trauma, institutional or otherwise, is often normalised and suppressed, which can have a lasting impact on someone’s mental and physical health, compelling them to fight for survival in the face of persistent stressors in their environment.  Thankfully, as Alyssa has seen in her social work and her private practice, many people, given the right help, can and do recover from trauma and learn how to reconnect to themselves and their communities in deep and meaningful ways. How? Alyssa focuses on bringing back the human element in therapy, going beyond evidence-based practices and focusing on the individual’s unique story and experiences. She recognizes that many of the people she works with are dealing with little traumas like bullying and failed relationships on a daily basis, and that their mental and physical symptoms are a function of survival.    Podcast Time Stamps 4:15 How Alyssa’s clients gave her hope, and the power of human resilience  5:46 What Alyssa thinks about evidence-based therapy and why she started her own therapy practice 9:33 The difference between little traumas and big Trauma 14:41 What is EMDR therapy and can it help you? 25:33 What is the “inner child” and how do you heal childhood wounds? 33:29 Should we forgive those who have hurt us? 36:15 Why being told you are a sinner is bad for your mental health 37:48 The difference between shame and guilt, and how to overcome them 41:55 When is it time to end a friendship? 49:00 You have everything you need in you to heal yourself!   Read the podcast blog and transcript here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/how-to-heal-from-trauma-signs-of-secondary-trauma-and-how-emdr-can-help-with-trauma-recovery-and-ptsd-with-therapist-and-trauma-expert-alyssa-mancao   For more info on Alyssa and to contact here visit her website: www.alyssamariewellness.com And follow her on social media:  https://www.instagram.com/alyssamariewellness/ https://www.facebook.com/alyssamariewellness     Link to find an EMDR therapist: http://www.emdr.com/SEARCH/index.php     This episode was made possible by the following sponsors:   -Feals CBD (the best CBD out there!): To get 50% off your Feals CBD order and free shipping see https://feals.com/drleaf. Episode #131: What to eat & what not to eat for optimal mental and brain health according to nutritional psychiatrist Dr. Georgia Ede

February 20, 2020 • 57m

In this podcast I talk to Harvard-trained nutritional psychiatrist Dr. Georgia Ede about how certain diets can affect our mental wellbeing, what foods help the brain function best, and what foods to avoid if we want to heal and improve our mental and physical health. Dr. Ede, in both her personal life and practice, has found that making certain lifestyle modifications can help treat major mental health issues such as ADHD, depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Through her research, she has found that nutrition can help heal and restore brain function, empowering people to take back control over their mental state and their lives, without the stigma and negative side-effects so common to pharmacological treatments for mental distress. For more on Dr. Ede visit: https://www.diagnosisdiet.com Highlights from this episode: 4:13-How Dr. Ede changed the way she treated mental health 5:53-How nutrition affects mental health 8:16-What is mental ill-health, and how can food help? 9:00-Food myths, and the best way to eat for a healthy body and mind 18:35-Is there one diet that works for everyone? 24:00-How nutrition has changed her patients’ lives 31:32-The biggest obstacles to nutrition and mental health 43:00-Health and wellness trends to be careful of 44:00-What we need to know about going plant-based 49:40-How to do keto correctly   For additional resources to help you on your mental health healing journey: Get my new 21 day brain detox program here: https://theswitch.app Register now for my 2020 Mental Health Summit Dec 3-5 in Dallas, TX! April 26, 2020 • 55m

Yes, we are in the midst of a global crisis. For many people, life is incredibly challenging right now. It is easy to lose hope, and fear what will happen in the future.
