PSP 057: The Impact of Technology on Kids with Anxiety and OCD: Interview with Dr. Adam Pletter

March 06, 2018 • 55m

Kids with anxiety and OCD often have an intimate connection with technology. It is where they go to distract themselves from their scary thoughts. It is where their obsessive nature takes over. It is the cause of huge meltdowns. It is the platform for google searches and rumination. It is the arena for bullying and low self-esteem. What’s your child’s relationship with technology? Do you know how to harness its power for good? Technology is not the enemy. In fact, it can be a great resource if you know how to use it. Join me for an insightful discussion with Dr. Adam Pletter, a psychologist and national expert in technology. ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 167: What is Emotional Contamination OCD?

May 19, 2020 • 24m

OCD can wreak havoc in any family. But one sub-type of OCD that can be particularly painful is emotional contamination OCD. Emotional contamination issues can hurt family relationships and confuse parents.Sadly most people, even mental health professionals, understand very little about how OCD can manifest. OCD isn’t just about germs and constant cleaning. OCD has many themes and sub-types. It is so important for families raising kids with OCD to educate themselves on the various ways OCD can show up. The best defense against OCD is to recognize it’s many disguises. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I discuss what emotional contamination OCD is and how it shows up in children and teens.***You also don’t want to miss Alisha’s Picky Eating Workshop Series outlining the 2-Step Process to moving your child From picky eater to healthy child. PSP 060: Keep Calm & Carry On While Raising Kids with Anxiety and OCD

March 31, 2018 • 28m

When I stare at my son spit a mouthful of food out and discretely tuck it under his plate my heart stops. When I spot my youngest daughter picking at her skin until it bleeds my stomach starts to hurt. When my kids stay up late at night because they are fearful they will be killed if they fall sleep my heart sinks. Anxiety and OCD are hard to stomach. It is hard to watch our children struggle and not allow it to be OUR struggle. To not allow it to be our defeat. How can it not be? But if you want to survive this whole business of raising kids with anxiety and OCD, perspective and separation are key. ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 049: Explaining Anxiety to People Who Don’t Get it: Helping Siblings, Family & Friends

January 09, 2018 • 46m

How many times have you heard people say things like,“you just coddle him too much” or “you just need to be tougher with her!” Some other oldies but goodies are, “She doesn’t act that way for me” and “he’ll grow out of it. Don’t worry.” Sometimes explaining anxiety to people who don’t get it can make your head spin. Trust me, I get it. I have bitten my tongue so many times - I have callouses. What about if those people are your other kids? What if you hear things like, "Why do you treat him like that?" or "If that was me I would totally get in trouble!" How can you explain anxiety to your other children so they can "get" their anxious sibling and maybe even help and not hurt the situation? ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 117: Helping Kids with Selective Mutism

May 06, 2019 • 49m

Selective Mutism can hide behind labels like “shy” and often gets missed by parents, educators and even therapists. I had the pleasure of talking to Patsy Butterworth, a State Coordinator for Selective Mutism.org and a mom to a child with Selective Mutism. Patsy has been a huge advocate for her son through his journey. She now supports other parents, connecting them to resources and spreading knowledge about Selective Mutism. In my interview with Patsy, she helps us understand what Selective Mutism is and what it is not. She also talks about how to advocate for your child, get a proper diagnosis and how parents can help their child with Selective Mutism. PSP 072: Helping Kids with Anxiety & OCD Survive the Summer

June 26, 2018 • 24m

The stress of school is finally over! No more homework battles, no more school refusal! Just pure relaxation. But summer isn’t always as easy as it seems for kids with anxiety and OCD. When a child is not busy with after school activities, projects and huge assignments, their mind is available for other things. And more often than not those “other things” aren’t pretty. PSP 101: How to Advocate for Your Child in School |504 Plan for Anxiety & OCD

January 14, 2019 • 32m

Anxiety and OCD can bully their way into our children’s education. It can create anxiety when it comes to going to school, it can create anxiety at school and it can be a minefield of triggers for a child with OCD. So where do you even start advocating for your child. And how do you know when it is time to get a 504 plan for anxiety or OCD?That can be hard. Especially when many of our kids look on the outside like they are holding it all together? Anxiety and OCD can cause our kids to silently suffer, leaving teachers and school administrators clueless of the storm that is brewing underneath. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast episode I am talking to Kori from the site Kori at Home. She has had plenty of experience advocating for her children in the school system, and now she is making it part of her mission to share her wisdom with other parents.***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 155: An Adoptive Mom Talks About her Journey Raising a Child with Invisible Needs

February 25, 2020 • 36m

Many of us fantasized what parenthood would look like way before we had children. Our ideas of parenthood might have been solidified in early childhood, as we tucked our baby doll into her toy crib. Or it may have been dreamt about the moment we knew we were about to become a parent. But for some of us, the dream and reality didn’t match. Our children had issues. Our children had fears. Our children had struggles.Janelle Molony’s idea of motherhood wasn’t what she had imagined. After entering the world of foster care to adopt her child, she was thrown into a whirlwind of issues and struggles she wasn’t anticipating. In her memoir, Un-Adoptable? Faith Beyond Foster Care, she recounts her struggles and triumphs and how ultimately, she was able to move out of the darkness and into the light.I had the pleasure of talking with Janelle on this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast. To learn more about Janelle’s work go to her website, www.adoptiontolife.com or check out her book Un-Adoptable? PSP 032: When Kids have to Confess Bad Thoughts: Helping Scrupulosity OCD

September 05, 2017 • 39m

“Mom I need to talk to you,” you hear your son whisper again. “I’m having bad thoughts.” You know where this is headed. This is the tenth time today he’s pulled you aside to talk. “Two years ago, I think I did something bad,” he confesses. His voice trails off as your mind starts to wonder. What is going on? Why does my son have to confess every thought, behavior and memory he thinks is bad? Why don’t my reassurances make him feel better? You remember once reading something about scrupulosity OCD, could that be what is going on? ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 114: Supporting Dads Raising Anxious Kids with Larry Hagner

April 16, 2019 • 46m

No one signs up for struggles. We all have our vision of what parenting will be. It usually does not involve a child with panic, fear and dread. It can be hard to pivot and alter your parental course. It can also be a challenge to pivot with a partner. Raising anxious kids is often counterintuitive. Many parents find they are not on the same page. Anxiety is rough on kids, but it can also be rough on marriages.I invited Larry Hagner from The Dad Edge Podcast to offer a perspective I don’t often talk about. The perspective of dads. What is it like to be a father raising a child with struggles? How can partners align without pointing fingers and being hurtful?Larry offers his insightful, humble perspective. He not only teaches us how to become better parents, he teaches us how to become better human beings. I thoroughly enjoyed my talk with him, and I know you will too.Learn more about Larry Hagner's awesome work at www.Thegooddadproject.com***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership?
